Birthday cakes by post - A great novel idea for someone hard to buy for.

I live a 40 minutes drive away from my parents. It isn't too far to visit easily for an afternoon, but it is too far to pop in for a cuppa after school pickup, or pop round on the off chance that they are in, for a chat.

It is far enough to require actually planning, logistics, pre-car toilet trips. You get the idea.

So I can't always pop and see them on special occasions. When I was given the opportunity to try out a new "letterbox cake" from BakerDays.com to send to my dad for his mid-week birthday I jumped at the chance.

It is a real cake. It is delivered by the post man. It is posted THROUGH the letterbox.

This ensures you can surprise your family and friends with a gift delivered by the postman and not worry about someone needing to be in to accept delivery, which is often the case when you send flowers and chocolates.

I had great fun selecting a "No. 1 Grandad" superhero design and requested a personalised message to be iced on the cake.

There are over 400 designs and five cake flavours to choose from: Madeira, lemon, fruit, carrot and double chocolate chip. We went with carrot.

You could also personalise your cake by uploading a photo of the person or a special moment.  Not only does the cake arrive in a neat little tin to keep it fresh but it also comes complete with candles, a gift card, balloons and a party horn. This is a lovely extra touch that shouldn't be underestimated; after all, who doesn't love a balloon or two!

In our case the cake unfortunately arrived a day late, but it arrived in one piece and I am told tasted delicious!   It was a lovely gift idea, took my dad completely by surprise, and was a perfect size (5 inch) to provide a slice of cake to accompany a cuppa for 4 people.  The fact that it isn't huge I think is a bonus; at least it is for us, as we are trying to watch our portion sizes and be a little healthier. I am taking a leaf out of the French's book and going for smaller sizes. (More on my current obsession with the French and their culture and parenting in future posts!)

All in all this personalised letterbox cake was a great change to the usual box of chocolates and was easy to order on-line.

The Letterbox cakes start at just £14.99 including delivery. Go to www.bakerdays.com to choose and create your own special gift. You can order now for Father's Day (16th June - in case you'd forgotten!).

We received a free Letterbox cake (or at least my Dad did) for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are our own.  I believe in honest reviews.
